Update: El Tour de Tucson Mountains 4/27
2008-04-18
April 18 from Dave
David's comments written on the course map Hi Shelly, Here's my commentary on the map. Sorry for the typos. I can do a lot of things in photo shop but text is not my forte. Couldn't figure out how to go back and correct them. You will have a blast on this route. It's mostly the same, but I think changing the start and cutting out some of Silverbell is an improvement. Be safe and have fun! David April 18 from Darin Good description on the route. I stayed at the hotel on Congress and road over with David a few years ago as a warm up. But that's when the start was by St. Mary's hospital. I think Lolita Wachter works there? Ajo can have cross winds coming off the mountains. The mountains will always be on your right. Sandario road northbound is like Pecos from Desert Foothills to 17th Ave. Rollers, with you having to change gears every 200 yards or so. It's hard to get in a rythym in a pack. You either over spin or are pushing hard on the pedals if you don't shift. The cattle guards can be tricky if the little metal plates protecting the gaps are missing. They are often slippery from the morning dew, but like David said, that was early on in the race when everyone was crowding in on the turns. They should be ok now with a start farther north. Rattlesnake pass is like climbing 17th Ave. Steep, but very short. Climbing over the saddle you have a nice view of Tucson before hitting the upper 20's on the downhill. Same kind of start corrals at ETP. Those who don't have platinums can line up in the front of the gold to join them. You need to get a platinum pass from the mandatory meeting to get in. Just saying you're platinum isn't good enough anymore. Good luck to those who are going. Darin April 16 So far there are 9 or 10 people I've talked to who are going to el Tour de Tucson Mountains a week from Sunday, April 27th. There are 70 and 27 miles options, as well as kids' 4 and 1/4 mile events. The course is relatively flat, with only rolling terrain and maybe a few hills. Those who are in so far include Larry, Randy, Mike, Rich and hopefully Brandy, Susan, Stu, Michelle, and Mark & Alex. Anyone else interested? more el Tour de Tucson info Route Map Hotels -Shell David Stefan and I did it a few years ago. No major hill climbs, just easy rollers with a few railroad and cattle guard crossings. Open to all ages and abilities, the Tour offers 70 and 27-mile courses. The 70-mile event is a perimeter ride around—not over—the beautiful Tucson Mountains. Both routes begin at Marana Town Hall in Marana, AZ and are generally flat, perfect for beginning riders! Kids, parents, family and friends are invited to participate in the Kids & Family Fun Ride, a 4-mile course routed adjacent the Marana Town Hall main event start line. Tour of the Tucson Mountains benefits Perimeter Bicycling Association of America, Inc., University of Arizona Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, UPH Children’s Fund at Kino, Pima Community College Scholarship Fund, and TMC Foundation Children’s Fund.
