Iron Horse Bicycle Classic website
I'm not in shape for this right now, but it sounds like some of you may be. It's a tough ride with challenging climbs (sorry Mike, you may need some gears for this one!). I did it three years in a row, and really enjoyed it every time. Take the spouse & kids and make a long weekend of it. The train from Durango to Silverton is worth the trip alone.
A couple of things if you decide to attempt it: Consider getting there at least a day (or more if possible) beforehand to acclimate. Many riders in our group got altitude sickness. Those of us that got there early and did a few light training rides didn't have any problems. Also, no matter how comfortable you are at the start, consider carrying a jacket. Every single year I did it, I got snowed/sleeted/rained on at the summit of Molas Pass. At 10,900 feet and above timberline, it's cold! Plus you have a screaming descent right after that and you will likely be sweaty from all that climbing. Lastly, speaking of the descent: Make sure your brakes are in good condition as you can reach speeds of up to 60 mph and there is a nasty sharp dogleg turn right at the very bottom! Sounds like fun huh?
Make sure to check out the ride profile on the website, it will give you an idea on what you are getting in to.
